The IVF Process

IVF is an advanced ART method where fertilization of egg and sperm followed by early embryonic development, takes place outside the human body through combination of medication and surgical intervention.

In IVF, the woman is given hormonal injections for 8 to 12 days to produce more number of eggs (10-15) and the monitoring is done with trans-vaginal ultrasound. When we get the desired response, the woman is given ovulatory trigger and after 34-36 hours of this injection, the eggs are taken out from the ovaries through ultrasound guided special needle under short anesthesia. These eggs are then incubated with washed sperms in a petri dish. The sperm penetrate the egg and fertilization happens. The embryos thus formed are cultured under controlled conditions in the incubators. After 3-5 days of culture, 1-2 best embryos are selected and transferred back in the uterus of woman with the help of a special catheter. The woman is prescribed medications for 2 weeks and then the pregnancy test is done.
