INTRA-UTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

IUI or Artificial Insemination is an ART method to enhance fertility in which washed semen is placed directly inside the uterus around the time of ovulation with a special catheter. IUI can be done using the husband’s sperm (AIH) or donor sperm (AID).The intent of IUI is to increase the number of motile sperms that reach the fallopian tube and hence increases the chance of fertilization. To consider IUI for a couple, pre-requisites are:

• Woman should be ovulating (naturally or induced)
• Fallopian tubes should be open
• Sperm count should be > 15 Million/ml and the motility should be > 40%.

IUI is the simplest form of ART and involves three basic steps:

• Ovarian stimulation to trigger follicle growth using medications
• Preparing the semen sample in the lab to facilitate sperm capacitation
• Inserting the special catheter into the uterus to inseminate the patient

IUI provides the sperm an advantage by giving it a head start, but still requires a sperm to reach and fertilize the egg on its own. IUI is timed with ovulation using ultrasound monitoring. Post IUI medications are advised and pregnancy test is done after 2 weeks. IUI is a simple and painless procedure. IUI treatment is less expensive and requires no off from your work.
