Assisted reproductive technology or assisted reproduction includes all medical treatments and
techniques that facilitate couples to start a family when it cannot be achieved naturally. All interventions
that include in vitro handling of both human oocytes and sperm or of embryos for the purpose of
reproduction fall under ART. The common ones being intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro
fertilization (IVF), third-party reproduction or donor-assisted reproduction, or PGT (Pre-implantation
Genetic Testing). The choice of one technique or the other will depend primarily on the cause of
infertility and doctor’s recommendation. The aim of ART is to achieve a pregnancy resulting in the birth
of a healthy newborn.
