For successful implantation into the uterus, an embryo must hatch out of its shell (zona pellucida) and attach to the endometrium. Assisted hatching is a complimentary procedure in IVF treatment where an artificial hole is made in the zona pellucida of the embryo using a beam of laser, thus helping the embryo to hatch and implant. This procedure is done just before the transfer of embryo to the uterus. LAH is a safe procedure if done by skilled personnel.
Assisted hatching is not recommended for all patients undergoing IVF. It is beneficial in patients with repeated IVF failures, embryos of older women and in frozen embryo transfer cycles or embryos developed from frozen eggs. LAH is the treatment of choice for those who have unexplained implantation failures.
